Been a good year for short stories. Yesterday we launched the new anthology from the writers of the Sutherland Shire branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers. And I contributed the reading of an extract from my story, "Beauty Amidst the Ruins". A collection of postcards I came across from an Australian World War One soldier inspired the story. I was struck by the way this soldier could see the beautiful things around him, despite the horrors of the western front, or perhaps because of them. He survived the war, and his postcards have survived even longer. I hope this story does some justice to his special insights on war, family and resilience.
